Craving Tracker vs. Craving Predictor: What’s the Difference?

Tracking tells you what happened. Prediction is about understanding what tends to happen before it. A craving tracker and a craving predictor sound similar.

But they answer two very different questions.

A tracker asks:

What happened?

A predictor asks:

What might happen next?

Both can be useful. But they serve different purposes.

What does a craving tracker do?

A craving tracker creates a record.

You might log:

When you had a craving.

How strong it was.

What you were craving.

Whether you acted on it.

Where you were.

Over time, that record can help you understand your history. That's valuable. But it is still largely looking backward.

What does a craving predictor do?

Prediction takes the next step.

Instead of only recording the craving, you look for the conditions surrounding it.

Maybe cravings are consistently stronger when:

You slept poorly.

Stress is unusually high.

Your energy drops.

You're in a certain environment.

It's a particular time of day.

Several of those signals happen together. A predictor attempts to use those patterns to identify when another difficult period may be approaching.

It doesn't mean knowing the future with certainty. It means using what you've already learned about yourself to make the future less surprising.

Tracking says: “There it was.”

Prediction says:

“Pay attention. This looks familiar.”

That's a meaningful difference. If you know you've entered a combination of circumstances that historically makes an unwanted behaviour more appealing, you can act sooner.

Change plans.

Change environments.

Eat.

Rest.

Call someone.

Create friction between yourself and the habit. The earlier you know, the more options you have.

Bestday combines daily tracking with pattern recognition

Bestday collects simple daily signals including sleep, mood, stress, energy and cravings. Those signals provide context. The goal is not just another history of what went wrong. It's helping you understand the conditions surrounding your behaviour so you can make more informed decisions before the difficult moment.

That's why Bestday is designed around predictive habit change, rather than simply streak counting.
