Why Do I Get Cravings at the Same Time Every Day?

That 5 PM craving might not be random. Your brain can learn to associate certain times, routines, and environments with a habit.

If your craving shows up like clockwork, pay attention.

You might crave a drink every evening at 5 PM.

A vape immediately after lunch.

Sugar around 9 PM.

Your phone the second you get into bed.

That doesn't necessarily mean your body suddenly needs that thing at exactly the same time every day. It may mean your brain has learned the routine.

Your brain loves patterns

Habits become associated with cues.

A certain time.

A place.

A feeling.

A person.

Finishing work.

Getting into the car.

Sitting on the couch.

Opening your laptop.

Eventually, the cue itself can start creating anticipation.

That means the craving may begin before you've consciously decided you want anything.

Your craving window is information

Instead of treating your usual craving time like a failure, treat it like data.

If you know 5 PM is consistently difficult, that's useful.

You now know when to prepare.

Ask yourself what else tends to be true around that time:

Are you hungry?

Tired?

Coming down from a stressful workday?

Finally alone?

Bored?

Looking for a reward?

Trying to switch your brain off?

The habit may be solving a problem, even if it's creating another one.

Interrupt the sequence earlier

Changing the behaviour at the very end of the loop can be difficult.

Try changing what happens before it.

If your pattern is:

Finish work → sit on couch → pour drink

Try changing the middle.

Finish work → walk outside.

Finish work → eat.

Finish work → call someone.

Finish work → go somewhere you don't normally associate with the habit.

You're not only removing something.

You're teaching your brain a different sequence.

Bestday helps make those patterns visible

Bestday helps you track daily signals and understand when difficult moments tend to occur. The goal isn't to make you obsess over every decision. It's to give you a heads-up when your usual pattern may be approaching. Once you know when you're vulnerable, you can start figuring out why. And once you understand why, changing what happens next becomes much easier.
